Consumer unit replacement

Modern consumer unit to the latest standards

The consumer unit is the heart of your electrical installation. For ageing, extension or new build we provide a safe, future-proof solution according to NEN 1010.

What is a consumer unit and how does it work?

The consumer unit (also called meter cabinet or distribution board) is the central distributor of power in your home or building. Power from the grid operator comes in here and is distributed over different circuits. Each circuit protects part of your installation with a circuit breaker and often an RCD.

Parts of the consumer unit

  • Main switch — Switches the entire installation on or off.
  • RCD (residual current device) — Trips on earth leakage (e.g. faulty appliance or moisture) and protects against electric shock.
  • Circuit breakers — Each circuit has a breaker that trips on overload or short circuit.
  • Cable — From the consumer unit to the various circuits (lighting, sockets, cooker, etc.).

Why circuits?

Without circuits, one fault or overload would cut power to the whole property. By dividing into circuits, the rest of the installation keeps working and it is easier to find the cause.

Which consumer unit do you need?

Number of circuits

A standard home easily needs 8 to 12 circuits: lighting, sockets per floor or room, cooker, washing machine, possibly a separate circuit for the bathroom, solar panels or EV charger. For extension or new build we determine the number of circuits based on your loads and NEN 1010 guidelines.

1-phase or 3-phase

Most homes have a 1-phase supply (230 V). For a cooker, EV charger or heavy machinery, 3-phase is sometimes needed. We can connect your consumer unit accordingly and arrange any supply upgrade with the grid operator.

When to replace?

Replacement is recommended for: outdated fuse board with rewirable fuses, too few circuits for your consumption, extension for solar panels or EV charger, or when an NEN 3140 inspection requires modifications.
